Laughter is the best medicine, and we should make sure we get some every day, but humor can also be a great teacher. With that in mind, here are 9 clever comics about money by various cartoonist.
Correlation and Causation
It is impossible to study investing without encountering statistical concepts, among them the devilish difficulty of distinguishing correlation from causation. This xkcd comic, by Randall Munroe, brilliantly illustrates why this is so difficult, and provides one of the reasons why it is so hard to beat the market, and why, for most of us, index funds are the best option.
Retail Holy Week
This comic, by Chan Lowe, is a timely reminder to have a budget and stick to it as the holiday season quickly approaches. Don’t get caught up in all the hype or all those “deals” will end up costing you dearly.
Indictment of the Financial Press
The financial press often makes Chicken Little look reasonable, as skillfully illustrated by this cartoon. Don’t fall for it. The next time the markets experiences a little turbulence, or even a lot, stay calm, ignore the overreaction in the press, and stick to your plan. I wish I knew who to give credit to for this great cartoon, but there is not a name on it.
Paying Off Student Loans
This one, by Walt Handelsman, would be a lot funnier if it didn’t hit so close to home. Ouch!
Interest Free Checking
I think I have one of these accounts. We must do business at the same bank. This one is a Bizarro comic by cartoonist Dan Piraro.
The Game of Life
While frightening at times, life is the ultimate video game, and virtual reality can never take the place of the real thing. So get out there, learn the secrets of success, and do your best to win. I can’t read the name on this one. If anyone knows who created it, let me know so I can give them credit.
The Golden Age of Investing
The present is the golden age of investing for the individual investor. The tools readily available to us are amazing and unprecedented. There is no excuse for burying your money in a treasure chest. Your job is to learn about these tools and use them in creating a financial plan. This is a Tundra comic by Chad Carpenter.
Marrying for Money
While I wouldn’t recommend marrying for money, you do need to make sure you are financially compatible enough with your partner that you can work together to reach your goals and dreams. This is another Tundra comic by Chad Carpenter.
Survivorship Bias
After you learn about the important concept of Survivorship Bias you will start to notice it all around you. Consider this before you try and follow someone else’s path to wealth and success. This is another comic by Randall Munroe at xkcd.
These clever money comics should have provided you your daily dose of laughter, and if you were paying attention you might have even learned something along the way. Hope you enjoyed them.
